Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity — these four criteria, standardized by the GIA, determine a diamond's value and beauty. Here's everything you need to know before you buy.
The Four Secrets of a Diamond: The 4Cs
When you think about buying a diamond, jewelers almost always mention the "4Cs." These four criteria were standardized by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and form a universal language for evaluating diamonds worldwide.
1. Carat — Weight, Not Size
Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its dimensions. 1 carat = 0.2 grams. However, the effect of carat on price is not linear — a 1.00 ct stone can be disproportionately more expensive than a 0.99 ct stone. This is due to demand spikes at specific thresholds (0.50 ct, 1.00 ct, 1.50 ct).
Practical tip: If you want a larger appearance without straining your budget, consider the 0.90–0.95 carat range.
2. Cut — Where Brilliance Is Born
Cut is the factor that most influences sparkle among the 4Cs. The geometry of the stone's facets determines how it bends and reflects light. GIA grades cut on five levels:
- Excellent
- Very Good
- Good
- Fair
- Poor
3. Color — The Colorlessness Scale
GIA's color scale runs from D to Z; D is the most colorless (and most valuable), while Z has a noticeable yellow or brown tint.
- D–F: Colorless
- G–J: Near Colorless
- K–M: Faint yellow
- N–Z: Noticeable tint
4. Clarity — Nature's Fingerprint
Most diamonds contain small imperfections (inclusions or blemishes) formed during the stone's creation. The GIA clarity scale:
- FL / IF: Flawless / Internally Flawless
- VVS1 / VVS2: Very Very Slightly Included
- VS1 / VS2: Very Slightly Included
- SI1 / SI2: Slightly Included (SI1 is usually eye-clean)
- I1 / I2 / I3: Included (visible to the naked eye)
Balancing the 4Cs
Everyone has different priorities. Here are common strategies:
- Budget-focused: Keep the cut excellent (Excellent/Very Good), G–H color, VS2–SI1 clarity
- Size-focused: Around 0.90 ct, G color, SI1 clarity, Excellent cut
- Quality-focused: D–F color, VVS1–VVS2 clarity, Excellent cut
